KUCHING, July 10: Malaysian Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad highlights that the eight river corridor rehabilitation projects worth RM63 million that have been completed will benefit approximately 195,000 people in Sarawak.
He stated this to reporters after paying a courtesy call to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.
Earlier, Nik Nazmi and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg witnessed the handing over of eight ‘River Corridor Rehabilitation Plan’ (RMKS) projects that had been completed by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak to the State government.
The eight riverbank restoration projects were located at Batang Kayan; Batang Balingian; Batang Sadong in Gedong town and Serian; Batang Sadong in Simunjan; Sungai Baram retaining wall; Rumah Naing; Sabtu Oya town; and Betong.
“The projects involved strengthening the riverbank to prevent erosion and ensure a smooth flow of river water.
“They are also intended to safeguard the private property of our people and the public structures along the riverbank. Approximately 195,000 residents have benefited from these projects,” he said.
Nik Nazmi continued by stating that the Federal government, through his ministry, would continue to collaborate closely with the Sarawak government to implement additional river corridor rehabilitation projects for the safety and welfare of Sarawakians.
“In tandem with the Madani Malaysia concept, locals’ standard of living would improve, and the State’s economic growth would be boosted,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Premier of Sarawak Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who was also at the press conference, thanked Nik Nazmi for bringing his team over to Sarawak for the working visit.
“We are grateful for the eight projects because some began several years ago and are now officially handed over,” Dr Sim said.
