SIBU, Feb 1: The 7th Special Olympics Sarawak State Games are slated to take place in Miri from Nov 23 to 24, marking a significant milestone as two new Special Olympics (SO) chapters, Bintulu and Samarahan, are set to participate for the first time.

Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, the chairperson of SO Sarawak and Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, announced today the inclusion of these new chapters, with plans underway for their formation.

Fatimah highlighted that the anticipated events at the state games would likely include athletics, swimming, bocce, badminton, and football, with final athlete participation numbers to be determined during the next committee meeting in April, following the establishment of the Samarahan and Bintulu chapters.

Leading up to the state games, each chapter will organize their own regional competitions to identify and prepare athletes.

During the press conference, Fatimah allocated over RM5,000 to SO Sibu and SO Kuching for their respective regional games, with additional funds provided to Sarawak SO for the state-level event.

This funding was sourced from Fatimah’s minor rural project (MRP) fund.

The allocation was received by Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai, chairman of SO Sibu, Datin Dayang Mariani, chairperson of SO Kuching, and Rawdiah Awang Mahmud, representing SO Sarawak. — DayakDaily
