KUCHING, Aug 24: A total of 79 individuals were detained during a surprise immigration crackdown on nightclubs and online gambling hubs in Kuching, following two enforcement operations codenamed ‘Ops Gegar’ and ‘Ops Sapu’.
According to a statement by Sarawak Immigration Department (JIM), the operations were carried out between Aug 22 and Aug 23 from 11pm to 2am, targeting five houses around Lorong Batu Kawa and Matang suspected of being gambling call centres, as well as an entertainment outlet in the city centre.
Of the 93 people inspected, 73 were Indonesians, one a Vietnamese woman, and five Filipino women.
Offences included possessing invalid travel documents, overstaying beyond permitted duration, and abusing social visit passes.
All detainees are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 as well as the Immigration Regulations 1963.
The department said the raids were mounted based on public tip-offs and intelligence, reaffirming JIM Sarawak’s commitment to combating illegal immigrants (PATI) and the misuse of visit passes.
JIM Sarawak expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and urged continued support to safeguard national security and sovereignty. — DayakDaily
