KUCHING, June 26: A total of 76 outstanding students from Batu Kawa and Batu Kitang constituencies who scored 5As and above in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination were presented with awards and certificates today by Batu Kawa assemblyman Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang.
According to a press release, the two constituencies have three secondary schools: SMK Batu Kawa and SM Min Lit Batu Kawa in Batu Kawa and SMK Arang Road in Batu Kitang.
During the ceremony, which was held jointly at the Chung Hua Batu Kawa Hall here, Dr Sim, who is also the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, stated that all Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) members of Parliament (MPs) and assemblymembers would use their own funds to promote a similar educational campaign that rewards students in their respective constituencies.
“Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot already carried out this a few days ago, today is Batu Kawa and Batu Kitang, and members from other constituencies will follow suit one after the other,” Dr Sim said.
He also stated that the educational activity to recognise outstanding students does not necessitate individual applications from students because SUPP will work with schools to ensure that outstanding students are recognised through the simplest channel possible.
Furthermore, Dr Sim emphasises that the Sarawak government places a high value on national education, noting that in addition to owning three universities affiliated with the Sarawak government, it also provides loans to students in need through Yayasan Sarawak.
He also encouraged students not to be discouraged by difficulties or economic problems, as long as they work hard, they will be able to achieve their objectives.
On the other hand, Lo mentioned that Singapore is a country without resources, but it has advanced because it relies primarily on human resources, and human resources must be trained through education. — DayakDaily
