SIBU, May 21: A 72-year-old Chinese woman was found dead after she got trapped in a house razed by fire at Lorong Kwong Tung, Jalan Lanang here in the early hours of this morning.

In a final operation report, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak said the charred remains of the victim was discovered near the entrance to her room within the second unit of the seven-linked wooden houses.

A team of firefighters from the Sibu Station worked to extinguish the flames while simultaneously conducting search and rescue upon arrival at the scene, after being alerted of the house fire around 6.43am today (May 21).

Eventually, the woman’s remains were recovered from the ravaged premises and entrusted to the police for further action.

The devastating fire destroyed the entire row of linked houses, rendering 20 residents homeless. Among them were three elderly men, three elderly women, six adults, and nine children.

Of the seven interconnected units, five were inhabited.

Firefighters brought the operation to a close at close to 10am. — DayakDaily
