MIRI, Nov 28: A 70-year-old man sustained minor burns after a pre-dawn fire completely destroyed his home along with three cars and three motorcycles at Kampung Riam Jaya early this morning.
The elderly victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by his son for further treatment, while his 66-year-old wife escaped unharmed.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the blaze broke out at their single-storey house, with firefighters receiving the distress call at 3.58am. Teams from Miri Fire Station and assisted by Lopeng Fire Station were deployed to the scene.
The fire, which engulfed the 40-by-60-square-foot house, also spread rapidly to six vehicles parked nearby. Three cars and three motorcycles were completely destroyed, while firefighters managed to save three other cars and a boat from burning further.
Firefighters carried out both defensive and offensive firefighting measures using hose reel lines and a 300-foot hose line, drawing water from the fire engine tank and the nearest hydrant. Lopeng firefighters assisted with suppression efforts at the rear section of the house.
The flames were brought under control at 4.33am and fully extinguished by 5.58am. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation. — DayakDaily
