KUCHING, Nov 24: Sarawak will implement a further seven per cent salary increase for civil servants in 2026, backed by an allocation of RM56 million.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced when delivering the Sarawak Budget 2026 at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) Sitting today.
He said the revised salary scheme, introduced following the State’s adoption of the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) with a new pay structure last year, is aimed at easing financial pressures faced by officers and helping them cope with rising living costs.
“This will be the second Sarawak’s salary adjustments after the first eight per cent increase took effect early this year, involving RM67 million,” he said.
Abang Johari stressed that strengthening the Sarawak Civil Service remains crucial as the State pushes forward with its development agenda under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
To enhance the skills, capacity and readiness of civil servants, the Premier announced RM48.5 million for training and talent development programmes in 2026.
This allocation covers technical skills development to boost specialised and job-related competencies; in-service training for officers pursuing formal studies and professional qualifications; and leadership and executive development to nurture strategic thinking, leadership capability and high-level management skills among senior and emerging leaders.
Abang Johari also highlighted the importance of fostering a healthy and supportive workplace environment.
“For 2026, RM1.26 million will be provided to support programmes that improve overall well-being and work-life balance, as well as studies to guide future workplace policies such as hybrid work arrangements, special needs support, and back-to-work initiatives.
With rising public expectations for efficient and high-quality services, he said the State is restructuring its departments and agencies to eliminate overlaps, streamline functions and strengthen accountability.
“This approach will help us build a leaner and more agile government that focuses on its core responsibilities, cuts unnecessary bureaucracy and delivers faster and better results to our people,” he said, adding that the goal is to ensure every organisation within the civil service contributes effectively towards realising PCDS 2030.
Recognising the vital contribution of civil servants, Abang Johari also announced a major investment in housing with a total of RM300 million will be allocated in 2026 to begin construction of new civil service housing and related facilities across several districts.
“This initiative reflects our dedication to improving living standards and strengthening institutional support for those who serve the State,” he said. — DayakDaily
