KUCHING, July 29: There are about 64,900 eligible Indonesian voters residing in Sarawak at the moment, based on a report from Jakarta last month.
Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono conveyed this to Sarawak media during Merdeka Bazaar held at Consulate General of Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Kuching’s office in Central Timur Road here today.
“That is a large number of voters and therefore, we (KJRI) will also have a lot to do ahead of the general election (in Indonesia).
“Maybe within one or two weeks before Feb 14 (2024 Indonesian general election), KJRI will go to several plantation areas with the ballot boxes so that the Indonesian workers there can vote.
“We will work together with the relevant parties involved so that this can be done and probably we will count the votes together on Feb 14,” he said.
The Merdeka Bazaar which commenced at 7am this morning will end at 3pm later.
There are 19 stalls operating during the bazaar with most stalls offering various Indonesian dishes and food products.
There were also musical performances and children games competition organised during the event.
“The bazaar aimed to foster better ties among Indonesians and the people of Sarawak to benefit both parties.
“It was also reported by the media that Indonesia will start the relocation process of its capital from Jakarta, Java to Nusantara, West Kalimantan in stages next year.
“Thus, Sarawak will become more strategic in establishing collaborations across various sectors with Indonesia especially in Kalimantan,” he added.
He also mentioned KJRI will organise another ceremony on Aug 17 to commemorate the 78th Indonesia’s Independence Day. — DayakDaily
