KUCHING, Aug 6: A total of 645 participants from 37 contingents throughout Malaysia gathered to perform a mass folk dance display in conjunction with the month-long Kuching Festival Fair (KFF) at Sarawak Hockey Stadium in Padungan Road here earlier tonight.
Most of the dancers were in their 60s and above but that did not dampen their spirit to put on the best show they could.
The elders were joined by the youths with the youngest being a primary school boy in the front row.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng who officiated at the event said folk-dance provides an excellent cardio workout, engaging the entire body from arms to legs.
“This event also aims to promote cultural awareness, foster tolerance and reduce discrimination,” he said.
The event was organised by MBKS led by Cr Judy Kho as the organising chairwoman.
Out of the 37 contingents present, 11 were from outside Kuching, namely Johor, Kelantan, Sabah, Bintulu, Lawas, Miri, Sibu and Sri Aman.
Speaking to DayakDaily at the event, Persatuan Tarian Perdana Kuching (PTPK) representative Loh Yan Guek who is in her 80s, stated that the whole dance team took three months to practise for the event.
“We sent the dance practice videos to the contingents outside of Kuching. From there, we practised together virtually.
“This is the first time all of us are performing the dance routine together as a whole team,” she said.
