MIRI, May 25: In a historic feat, Wong Su Chung, 60, has become the first Sarawakian to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who represented the Sarawak government to welcome Wong’s return from Kuala Lumpur at Miri Airport today, expressed immense pride in Wong’s achievement.
In light of Wong’s achievement, Ting recommended that the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah appoint Wong as an ambassador for the ministry.
“I believe this will be good for Sarawak, especially in promoting tourism,” Ting said when met at the airport.
Wong reached the summit at precisely 9.37am on May 19. His extraordinary journey to the summit, standing at a staggering 8,848.86 metres, took a gruelling 45 days.
His preparation for this monumental challenge spanned over three years, involving rigorous training and acclimatisation to extreme weather conditions. — DayakDaily
