SIBU, March 13: University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) will hand over food aid to 58 needy families from all races under its “Show You Care, Give A Share” programme.

University staff and students will go to the homes of the various recipients to distribute food baskets which cost RM100 each from March 13 to 19.

“This is the third time that we are doing this. Our objective is to relieve the economic burden of the affected group due to the rising cost of living and goods prices,” said UTS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Hamid to reporters here today.

He said as students will be helping out in distributing the items to the recipients at their homes, this would enable them to understand the difficulties faced by the latter.

The university hopes to encourage its staff and students to get involved in charity events through this programme.

“By getting involved in charity events, it is hoped that they would be responsible members of the community helping people of all races and religions,” said Dr Khairuddin.

Event director Mohd Kamarul Anwar said the recipients are those who are on the Baitumal list. They are also UTS students and non-students from all races who need help.

Hijrah Suri convenience shop manager Khamsiah Yacob said they were happy to be involved in the programme.

“We are thankful that we can be involved in giving service to the community. We have also recommended some recipients who are from 10 NGOs to UTS. We packaged the food baskets for free,” she said. — DayakDaily
