SIBU, Oct 16: Police has arrested a 47-year-old local man last night to assist in the investigation of an assault case believed to have occurred along Jalan Rantau Panjang here on Tuesday night.
Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media showing a man lying on the road, believed to have been assaulted by several individuals, TVS reports.
“Preliminary investigation shows that the incident took place by the roadside. The victim, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to the Sibu Hospital for further treatment and is currently reported to be in critical condition,” he said.
The suspect, he said, has been detained for further investigation and will be remanded at the Sibu Magistrate’s Court to assist in the investigation under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
“If found guilty, the suspect could face imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine,” he explained.
According to TVS, Zulkipli advised the public not to speculate or share the video of the incident on social media, as it could jeopardize the investigation process.
