MIRI, Oct 29: A 47-year-old Indonesian man was killed after being attacked by a crocodile while drawing water from a river near a palm oil plantation in Suai Niah along the Miri-Bintulu Coastal Road today.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak, the victim and two co-workers were collecting water from the riverbank to fill pesticide containers when the tragic incident occurred.
The victim was suddenly attacked by a crocodile in front of his friends, who witnessed him struggling and reaching out for help before being dragged into the water.
Following an emergency call received at 11.34am, a team from the Batu Niah Station led by operation commander PBT II Rary Binjie was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival at 12.20pm, firefighters launched a search operation using surface search methods and grappling irons, covering an estimated 700-metre radius upstream and downstream of the river.
At about 4.40pm, rescuers found the victim’s body about 500 metres from where he was last seen. He was discovered in a dismembered state and pronounced dead at the scene.
The operation concluded at 5.20pm, and the victim’s remains were handed over to the police for further investigation. — DayakDaily
