KUCHING, Nov 14: Four men were charged in the Sessions Court here today for allegedly taking part in a violent attack using ‘kwang tao’ weapons that left two victims seriously injured inside a bistro along Jalan Lapangan Terbang here at about 11.35pm on November 1.
The accused, aged between 18 and 29, claimed trial to two counts read before Judge Iris Awen Jon.
According to the charges, the four—together with 11 other individuals still at large—were part of an unlawful assembly that intentionally injured two men, aged 32 and 19, using blades.
The case is framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 149. Upon conviction, the offence carries up to 20 years’ imprisonment and may also involve a fine or whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng objected to bail, stressing that the offence is non-bailable and that releasing the accused could pose a risk of their absconding.
He added that all four were allegedly involved in gang-related activities.
Chuah further informed the court that the first two accused, aged 21 and 19, already have ongoing cases under Sections 325 and 324 of the Penal Code for causing hurt, as well as drug-related offences.
The fourth accused, aged 29, reportedly faces a separate charge of possessing scheduled dangerous weapons without valid permission.
Defence counsel Ralph Lee, representing all four accused, urged the court to grant bail to the first three, arguing that they are young offenders. He also requested bail for the fourth accused, noting that the man works as a construction labourer and is the sole breadwinner for his two children.
The court, however, denied bail and ordered all four to remain in custody pending the conclusion of the case. The matter has been fixed for mention and case management on January 9, 2026.
