3rd Miri Marathon draws 4,000 participants

Some 4,000 people took part in the Miri Marathon today (March 17, 2019). For those running the full marathon (42km), they were flagged off at 2am.

MIRI, March 17: The 3rd Miri Marathon today attracted roughly 4,000 runners, with 70 per cent of them foreigners.

The foreign participants were from Brunei, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, Kenya, India, Hong Kong, Morocco, the United States, South Korea, South Africa, Belgium, Thailand, China and New Zealand.


This year’s full marathon (42km) roped in about 1,400 runners, while the 21km version recorded 1,700 runners and the 10km speed run had 800 runners.

Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting flagged off those participating in the full marathon at 2am at Miri Stadium.

From Miri Stadium, the runners headed towards Lutong, followed by the Beach Republic in Luak before retracing to Miri Stadium.

The half-marathon (21km) category was flagged off at 5am, while the 10km speed run started at 6am.

The event was jointly organised by Miri Marathon Association (MMA) and Miri City Council (MCC) in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports. — DayakDaily
