KUCHING, Jan 14: A total of 389 students in the Kuala Rajang state constituency have received school essentials under the Sarawak government’s Back To School programme, aimed at easing the financial burden on low-income families ahead of the 2026 school session.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the initiative reflects the Sarawak government’s continuous commitment to ensuring the welfare of underprivileged groups, particularly in the area of education.
“The Back To School Programme is a continuation of several welfare initiatives previously implemented in the Kuala Rajang DUN, including the Perdana Circumcision Programme in December 2025 and the Free Haircut Programme in early January 2026,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report.
The programme was organised by the Kuala Rajang DUN Service Centre in collaboration with Saberkas Kuala Rajang, and was carried out at several schools in the Tanjung Manis Zone, involving the Belawai and Rajang areas.
In the Tanjung Manis Zone, assistance was distributed to students from six primary schools and one secondary school, namely SMK Belawai, SK Abang Gesa Belawai, SK Abang Buyuk Jerijih, SK Abang Galau Rajang, SK Batang Sebayang and SK Stalun.
The assistance benefited 389 students, who received school bags, shoes, water bottles and stationery to prepare them for the new school session.
The next phase of the programme will cover the Sarikei Zone, involving 11 schools and benefiting a total of 822 recipients.
The initiative highlights strong collaboration between local leaders and youth groups in addressing community needs. — DayakDaily
