MIRI, Dec 9: A total of 375 residents from two longhouses in Sepupok, Batu Niah were evacuated early this morning after rising floodwaters inundated their homes, as several parts of Miri also reported high water levels following continuous rain.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Batu Niah responded to a distress call at 12.30am and arrived at RH Aron Skim and RH Lumpoh, where both longhouses were found surrounded by rapidly rising water.
Under the command of PBK I Jeffery Majin, the team carried out a relocation operation involving 84 families.
RH Lumpoh consisted of 27 families with 119 residents, while RH Aron with 57 families totalling 256 residents. The evacuees included adults, senior citizens, and children.
All 375 victims were safely moved to the homes of their relatives, as no temporary evacuation centre (PPS) was opened as yet.
The operation was brought under control at 5.23am and concluded at 6.21am. Bomba reported that water levels were still rising at the time of evacuation, but no injuries were recorded.
Elsewhere, Bomba Miri Central conducted flood monitoring patrols along several flood-prone routes including Jalan Lotus in Kampung Luak, Jalan Daro in Taman Tunku, Jalan Riam Jaya 1 and Kampung Lereng Bukit. Continuous rain was reported throughout the patrol.
At Jalan Lotus 1, water levels reached an estimated height of four feet and had entered homes, categorising it as a high-risk area.
Water pooling was observed in low-lying parts of Jalan Riam Jaya 1, though it did not affect residential areas.
In Jalan Daro, Taman Tunku, earlier flash floods had receded, while conditions in Kampung Lereng Bukit remained under control despite being known for landslide and flash-flood risks.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as unstable weather persists. — DayakDaily
