35yo man fined RM6,000 or six months imprisonment for possessing ‘ketum’ water

KUCHING, May 23: A 35-year-old local man was fined RM6,000 or six months imprisonment by the Sessions Court today for possessing three bottles of ‘ketum’ water.

Nazri Mohamad Salleh pleaded guilty to the charge read before judge Iris Awen Jon.

He was charged with possessing the psychotropic substance Mitragynine at a house in Kampung Segedup around 9.30pm on Nov 14, 2023.

The charge was brought under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 30(5) of the same Act. The penalties for this offense include a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

According to the case details, a police team conducted a raid at the Kampung Segedup house and arrested Nazri on suspicion of drug possession.

During the inspection, officers found three 1.5-litre bottles containing a brown liquid, believed to be ‘ketum’ water, stored in a red refrigerator.

Subsequent analysis by the Malaysian Chemistry Department confirmed that the liquid contained Mitragynine.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer. — DayakDaily
