MIRI, June 18: A 30-year-old local man has been nabbed in Pujut 2 residential area, leading to the closure of five business premises break-in cases that had affected business owners across Miri since May.

“Intensive investigations conducted on the suspect led to the discovery of clothing and personal accessories worn by him while committing the offences, which were carried out alone.

“Police also seized a modified small saw believed to have been used by the suspect to forcibly pry open roller shutter door locks at the targeted business premises,” he said in a statement today.

According to Mohd Farhan, the arrest helped solve five break-in cases with a similar modus operandi at Airport Commercial Centre, Assar Commercial Centre along Miri Bypass, Mosjaya, Permyjaya and Boulevard Miri.

“The victims were estimated to have suffered losses of about RM15,000. The suspect also has several prior criminal and drug-related records and tested positive for drugs,” he added.

The suspect is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment, a fine, and whipping for repeat offences upon conviction.

Mohd Farhan stressed that police will not compromise on criminal activities and will continue to ensure offenders are brought to justice.

He added that such enforcement action is necessary to safeguard public safety and protect property in Miri District. — DayakDaily
