KUCHING, Oct 23: The 3,000-acre Kota Petra Green Technology Park, featuring a 300-megawatt large-scale solar power plant and a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, is set to become one of the leading green technology centres in the region.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the ambitious project, led by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC), will showcase comprehensive digital integration to support artificial intelligence (AI)-driven data centre operations and high-tech industries.
“The energy storage system will power AI-based data centre sites and advanced industries, further positioning Sarawak as a regional hub for green innovation and sustainable development,” he said.
He made these remarks when delivering his keynote address titled ‘Ethical AI and the Green Digital Economy: Sarawak’s Path to Regional Leadership in Utility and Telecommunication’ at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2025 (IDECS 2025) held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Julaihi, who also serves as Minister-in-Charge for IDECS 2025, revealed that the development in Petra Jaya is progressing positively and is poised to become one of the first of its kind in southern Sarawak.
He added that the Kota Petra Green Technology Park will be integrated with the Sarawak Data Centre Park, which will be powered entirely by renewable energy supplied by Sarawak Energy as the main power partner.
“The park will be built to Tier 4 international standards, the highest benchmark for efficiency and reliability in data infrastructure,” he said, noting that the demand for green, secure and ethically managed data centres is rapidly increasing across ASEAN.
“Sarawak’s true value lies not only in its technological capability but also in its credibility, offering investors, developers, and governments an ecosystem where sustainability and ethics go hand in hand,” he emphasised.
Also present at the event were SDEC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, SDEC chief executive officer Dato Ir Ts Sudarnoto Osman and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng. — DayakDaily
