KUCHING, March 18: An elderly man with special needs and two women had to be rescued from a car stuck in waist-deep floodwaters at Jalan Tong Wei Tah (in front of Maybank) as heavy rain and thunderstorms inundated many parts of Kuching and Samarahan this morning.

The Civil Defence Force (APM) Kuching District Major (PA) Wan Khairul Zakwan Wan Tajudden confirmed that its flood watch team had rescued the passengers trapped in the car in floodwaters at 10.27am.

One car was also reported to have broken down in the middle of the road near Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg due to the floods.

APM officers helped to push the damaged car to the road shoulder so that it would not obstruct traffic flow in the area.

In addition, 24 houses in Kampung Gersik as well as some houses at Lorong Kampung Boyan were affected as floodwaters entered the houses. However, all the roads in the areas were still passable to vehicles while floodwater levels were reported to be receding slowly.
