29yo man gets 8 years jail, 10 strokes for drug possession

KUCHING, June 21: The High Court today sentenced an unemployed man to eight years in prison and 10 strokes of the cane for possession of cannabis and methamphetamine in February of last year.

Amirul Hafiz Safek Effendi, 29, pleaded guilty to an alternative charge and an amended charge before Judge Leonard David Shim.

Both offenses were committed in an apartment room in Batu Kawa around 10.45 am on February 24, 2023.

Judge Leonard sentenced Amirul to eight years in prison and 10 strokes of the cane for the alternative charge and 10 months in prison for the amended charge. The court ordered that the prison terms run concurrently, effective from the date of arrest on Feb 24.

According to case facts, on the day of the incident, the accused was arrested in a parking lot in front of an apartment building on suspicion of drug involvement.

A body search of the accused revealed nothing suspicious, but when questioned by police about any drugs in his possession, he admitted to storing drugs in his rented apartment room.

Police then searched the accused’s apartment and found a slab of compressed dried plant material wrapped in black plastic, three transparent plastic packets containing compressed plant material believed to be cannabis, and one transparent plastic packet containing crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Danial Mohammad Ali, while the accused was represented by Lawyer Gerald Empaling Donald. — DayakDaily
