KUCHING, Jan 12: A total of 28 schools across Sarawak were unable to operate this morning following flooding in several areas, says Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli.
Speaking to reporters during a doorstep interview at SMK Petra Jaya today, Omar clarified that the figure was revised after further discussions with affected schools yesterday (Jan 11).
“Yesterday morning, we reported that 42 schools were unable to operate. In the afternoon, we held a meeting with all 42 schools, reviewed the situation, and after reassessment, we managed to reduce the number to 26 schools that could not operate this morning,” he said.
However, he added that the number increased again after the Dalat District Education Office (PPD Dalat) informed the department last night that two additional schools in the area had been inundated by floodwaters.
“So that brings the total to 28 schools in Sarawak that could not operate this morning,” he explained.
On possible damage to school facilities, Omar said no reports of serious damage had been received so far, although water levels had risen at several premises.
He explained that schools had been repeatedly reminded to relocate their assets and equipment to higher ground as a precautionary measure to minimise losses.
“We have reminded schools several times to ensure school assets are placed in safer locations to avoid more serious damage. Unless it is a sudden flash flood that cannot be anticipated, we are usually able to save most of the assets.
“So far, I have not received any reports from district education offices about severe damage,” he added.
Omar also confirmed that not all affected schools were required to immediately switch to home-based teaching and learning (PdPR).
“Yes, that is the best option for them at this time. Moreover, during the first week of the school term, we are focusing on orientation sessions and fun learning activities as part of the school opening week,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
