KUCHING, Sept 23: A total of 26 roads and junctions across Kuching will be temporarily closed or diverted this weekend, with traffic measures taking effect from noon on Sept 26 until 10am on Sept 27 for the Kuching Marathon 2026.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the traffic measures were necessary to facilitate preparations for and the running of the marathon, which involves local and international participants.
“Accordingly, to ensure the smooth running of the programme and traffic flow, PDRM will implement closures and diversions at the following locations,” he said in a statement today.
The first three locations, namely Lebuh Wayang/Main Bazaar, Main Bazaar/Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg/Carpenter Street, would be closed from noon on Sept 26 until 10am on Sept 27 for venue preparations.
Meanwhile, Jalan Barrack/Jalan Pearl will then be closed from 10pm on Sept 26 until 10am on Sept 27.
From 12.01am on Sept 27, the remaining affected routes will be closed or diverted until 10am to facilitate the marathon.
These include the Jalan Pearl traffic lights/Jalan Wawasan route towards Padang Merdeka, Lebuh Wayang/Jalan Wawasan, and Jalan McDougall/Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.
Other affected locations are the Jalan Haji Taha slip road, Jalan Ajibah Abol traffic lights, Jalan Muhibbah/Jalan Kulas junction, and Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob/Jalan Merdeka junction.
The closures will also cover the Jalan Kampung Lintang/Jalan Astana traffic lights, Courthouse Roundabout, SESCo Roundabout, Samariang Roundabout and Jalan Sultan Tengah traffic lights near the Fire and Rescue Station.
Also affected are the Jalan Sultan Tengah traffic lights near Sego, Yayasan Roundabout, Kesuma Resort Roundabout, Stadium Roundabout and Gersik Roundabout.
The list continues with the Merrican Salleh Road/Kwong Lee Bank Road traffic lights, Tanah Putih Clinic traffic lights, Jalan Sekama/Pending traffic lights, Sri Aman Roundabout and Jalan Gamelan/Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob junction.
“PDRM urges members of the public attending the event not to park their vehicles along the road shoulders,” he said.
He also advised road users to plan ahead and use alternative routes to ease traffic congestion during the marathon.
