KUCHING, Aug 29: Some 250 students from six secondary schools in Sibu received hands-on exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) today by building solar-powered fans and cube circuits at the PETRONAS Powering Knowledge: Discover PETRONAS @Schools Sibu programme.
The participating schools were SMK Kampung Nangka, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Agama Sibu, SMK Jalan Oya, SMK Sungai Merah and SMK Rosli Dhoby.
According to a fact sheet of the event, the programme held at SMK Kampung Nangka featured a series of fun and interactive activities led by Petrosains, including a science show titled “Water Water Everywhere”, as well as sessions such as Giant Jenga and Giant Tangram.
The event was launched by Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
Also present were his deputy Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is Nangka assemblyman; PETRONAS senior vice president of LNG Assets Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh; and PETRONAS Sarawak regional office general manager Norazibah Md Rabu.
Discover PETRONAS @Schools, which aims to spark students’ interest in STEM and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), has been rolled out across Sarawak since last year.
In 2024, the programme reached more than 650 students in Sri Aman, Miri, Gedong and Kapit, while earlier this year it benefitted another 320 students in Mukah and Baram.
The initiative also serves to promote the PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme, aligning with PETRONAS’ Sustainability Agenda and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education.
According to PETRONAS, the outreach demonstrates its commitment to supporting Sarawak’s educational growth and human capital development by nurturing future talent in STEM and TVET fields. — DayakDaily
