24yo man arrested in RM29,651 job scam in Saratok

KUCHING, Nov 13: A 24-year-old local man was arrested in a police operation for his alleged role in a job scam in Saratok that cheated a victim out of RM29,651.

According to Saratok District Police Chief DSP Mathew Manggie, the police detained the suspect during ‘Op Belatuk’ on Nov 12. Police said he owned a GX Bank account used in the scheme.

“The victim, an HR executive, was first approached in February via WhatsApp by someone claiming to be from a travel agency.

“The victim was offered a part-time job and joined a Telegram group called ‘agoda booking group-44’ to perform tasks that involved transferring money.

“Initial tasks returned commissions, but subsequent ones led to losses totalling RM29,651,” Mathew said in a statement today.

Police investigation revealed the suspect admitted sharing his account login with another individual who moved money to their family.

He claimed he was unaware of the account’s transactions due to lack of notifications.

The suspect has been released on police bail as investigations continue. – DayakDaily
