KUCHING, Aug 19: With a tally of 24 gold medals as of 12 noon today, Sarawak remains at the top of the table and on track to achieve the overall champion target at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma).
According to Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the number of collected gold medals so far is in accordance with the plans of the Sarawak contingent.
“In muay thai, five Sarawak athletes made it to the finals and they have great potential to earn gold medals.
“We also have high hopes for the boxing event to secure gold for us,” he said when met by reporters while watching the men’s cricket finals between Sarawak and Kelantan at the cricket field in Petra Jaya here today.
Abdul Karim further noted that the State’s taekwondo squad has recorded a surprising achievement with the contribution of 11 gold medals.
“The taekwondo squad targetted only 7 gold and this (11 gold medals) is a good development.
“For cricket, this is Sarawak’s first time ever that they made it to the finals. This is a historic achievement for Sarawak in cricket,” he added. — DayakDaily
