23yo Lyechea Charlie takes home Bintulu Kumang Gawai title, triumphs with RM10,000 prize

KUCHING, June 18: Lyechea Charlie was crowned the ‘Kumang Gawai Dayak Bintulu’ during the Bintulu Division Gawai Dayak dinner ceremony held at a restaurant in Bintulu on Friday (June 14).

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the 23-year-old triumphed over nine other contestants, winning a cash prize of RM10,000, along with a tiara, trophy, sash, bouquet of flowers, and a participation certificate.

At the prestigious event, she also won the ‘Ngepan Pemadu Manah’ category and received a cash prize of RM2,000.

Meanwhile, Jolin Ling won the title of ‘Lulong’ (first runner-up) and received RM7,000 in cash, a trophy, a sash, a bouquet of flowers, and a certificate of participation.

Furthermore, the title of ‘Selinggar Matahari Gawai’ (third place) was won by Emilia Mujan Kayan, 29, who took home RM5,000 in cash along with a sash, a trophy, a bouquet of flowers, and a certificate of participation.

The seven contestants who placed fourth to 10th were Arabella Sunta Langkan, Jianna Lent Sim Jimbun, Stephanie Abby Beji, Rebecca Lu Yann Ru, Steffy Sharon Saging, Avril Lavigne Siang, and Praty Sofia Bantin.

They were each awarded a monetary consolation prize of RM500, a bouquet of flowers, and a certificate of participation.

The prize-giving ceremony was officiated by Datin Seri Loreta Sawot, the wife of Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development (M-Ficord) and Kemena assemblyman Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

Ukas further reported that the ‘Kumang Gawai Dayak Competition Bintulu Division 2024’ recorded the highest prize money in history in Bintulu since its organisation.

Also present were Dr Rundi, Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, Bintulu Division resident, Nyurak Keti, as well as other guests. — DayakDaily
