KUCHING, Apr 12: The road paving project to Kampung Ulu Teru is finally underway, commencing on Dec 18, 2025, and is expected to be completed by December 2027.

According to Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, the RM45.2 million project covers approximately 23.4km of road, comprising 21.5km of upgrades to the existing road and 1.9km of new road construction, to be developed in accordance with R1 standards set by the Public Works Department (JKR).

He said the project scope also includes the construction of six Rolled Steel Joists (RSJ) bridges, one concrete bridge, installation of culverts, drainage systems, and street furniture to ensure safety and comfort for all road users.

“This project is expected to benefit 14 longhouses, involving 397 doors and approximately 2,500 residents. In addition, a further 35 longhouses, involving approximately 600 doors and an estimated population of 5,600 people in Ulu Teru and surrounding areas, including Sungai Nat, Sungai Lamah and Bukit Limau, will also benefit from this development.

“Residents will no longer rely solely on Jalan Kilometre 10 as their main access route,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project at Jalan Ulu Teru in Miri today. A copy of his text speech was made available to the media.

Uggah, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, said that the upgrade will not only make access to nearby towns and cities, clinics, schools, and agricultural areas easier, but residents will also find it easier to send their children to school.

“The road will facilitate settlement along the Ulu Teru corridor and improve mobility for residents, farmers and traders. As a result, the standard of living and socio-economic conditions in the rural areas of Marudi will improve, helping to close the development gap between rural and urban areas in line with the government’s policy to achieve the goals of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

At the same time, Uggah also warned contractors that the Sarawak government will not tolerate any project delays or failure to meet specifications.

He elaborated that delays not only affect development but also directly impact the lives of the people who depend on this infrastructure.

“To all contractors appointed by JKR Sarawak, projects must be completed on time and in accordance with the highest quality standards set. There will be no excuse for intentional delays.

“I also call on JKR Sarawak to intensify monitoring efforts. Supervising officers must visit project sites more frequently to personally monitor progress. If a project deviates from the schedule, an action report must be prepared immediately, and corrective measures must be taken promptly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Uggah said that for Marudi, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government has approved more than RM722 million for the implementation of 52 government infrastructure projects.

Of this total, 25 have been completed, and four are currently under implementation, with a combined value of RM387 million. The remaining 23 projects, worth RM335 million, are in the tender preparation stage.

“These projects are the result of the dedication of the elected representative for Marudi, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, who has consistently voiced the needs of the people, directly contributing to development in the Marudi area.

“All these projects demonstrate the commitment of the GPS Government to bring development to rural areas, ensure better road access, and enhance road connectivity between towns and major urban centres throughout this region,” he said. — DayakDaily
