KUCHING, March 15: A total of 216 teams are set to participate in the grand procession celebrating the birthday of the Seng-Ong deity at Hong San Si Temple on March 21.
As per tradition, the Kuching Hokkien Association Hong San Si will organise the annual event, with the procession commencing at 3.30pm.
Association president Dato Richard Wee stated that preparations have been underway since December last year, with extensive promotion through social media.
“This sacred celebration not only honours the Seng-Ong Deity but also aims to promote the historical significance of Hong San Si Temple, which has stood for over two centuries on Wayang Street, Kuching,” he said during a press conference today.
The event upholds the deity’s virtues of loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, and righteousness.
It will draw participants from various associations, dragon and lion dance troupes, businesses, and individuals from Sarawak and Sabah.
Recognised as a key highlight of Sarawak’s annual official tourism calendar, Wee emphasised that the festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors.
A series of activities will take place from March 17 to 28, featuring cultural performances, including singing and dancing, lion and dragon dance performances, a drum showcase, a worship ceremony, and charitable events.
“One of the highlights will be the arrival of the Mazu Empress at the temple by vessels from Muara Tebas,” he said.
The Lien Heng Wushu Association, the procession’s permanent main team, will conduct traditional ceremonies such as the eye-dotting ritual of the Hior-Huay-Liong (Incense Dragon), the Dragon-Head-Incense Ceremony, and the distribution of lucky gold-plated coins.
Wee encouraged the public to visit Hong San Si Temple and experience the unique cultural atmosphere.
Additionally, he advised that certain road sections will be temporarily closed during the event.
Wee warned that the association is coordinating with local authorities to relocate any obstructing vehicles using forklifts or trailers.
“The public is urged to park in designated areas to ensure a smooth procession,” he advised.
This year’s celebration follows the momentous visit of the gold statues of Seng-Ong and Seng-Ma from Nan’an Fengshan Temple in Shishan, China, last year. In the spirit of gratitude, devotees will pray for world peace, national prosperity, and favourable weather. — DayakDaily
