BINTANGOR, June 7: A 20-year-old man with a history of epilepsy is feared to have drowned while retrieving fish traps in the river near Rh Balah, Sungai Stubah here today.

According to a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak, a distress call was received at approximately 12pm, and a team was despatched to the site.

The missing man’s sister stated that her brother had ventured to the river to retrieve fish traps located 70 metres away from the longhouse jetty.

At the time of the incident, he was shirtless and wearing only shorts. He holds a disability card.

Concerns have arisen that the man may have fallen from his boat and gone missing after villagers discovered the empty boat on the river.

The search and rescue team from Bomba Bintangor station commenced an operation at 1.30pm, utilising water surface searching and a grappling iron at the location of where the man is suspected to have fallen into the river.

Additionally, a total of 28 villagers using eight boats took part in the search operation, diving into the river and utilising fishing hooks.

Police personnel were also present at the site.

The search and rescue operation was postponed at 4.50pm due to heavy rain. — DayakDaily
