20yo man from Sibu feared drowned after being swept away by strong river currents in Lubok Antu

KUCHING, Aug 30: A 20-year old man from Sibu is feared to have drowned after he was reportedly swept away by a strong current while bathing in a river in Lubok Antu today.

According to a report from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre, they received a call regarding the incident from the police at 1.59pm and deployed Bomba Betong personnel to the location.

Initial reports said that the victim, Mohd Fandi Wong Mohd Awang Wong from Sibu, was bathing with two friends in Sungai Lubok Subong before he was swept by the current into the center of the river.

It was understood that the victim did not know how to swim.

A search and rescue operation was launched by Bomba together with other enforcement agencies to locate the victim by water surface searching in a one kilometer radius from where he was last seen.

The operation was later postponed at 5.30pm and will be continued tomorrow. — DayakDaily
