KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20: More than 20,000 people donned sarongs and took to the streets for the Malaysia Sarong Music Run 2026, turning the mass participation event into a showcase of the country’s cultural heritage ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 (VM2026–2027).
According to a Facebook post by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Seri Tiong King Sing, he joined Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in flagging off the 5km run and subsequently ran alongside participants.
In the post, he described the event as a celebration that brought together sport and culture, with participants wearing sarongs while enjoying music and cultural performances along the route with their friends and families.
“The 5km run not only offered an enjoyable experience, but also encouraged an active and healthy lifestyle.
“By celebrating Malaysian traditions in a fresh, accessible way, the event kept the nation’s heritage relevant and reached a broader audience,” he said.
Tiong explained that events such as the Malaysia Sarong Music Run could help introduce Malaysia to domestic and international visitors through experiences that combine culture, activity and community participation.
He noted that the event supports the VM2026–2027 campaign by highlighting the nation’s culture, music and hospitality to a larger audience.
“Malaysia’s culture is colorful, inclusive and forward-thinking. I hope initiatives like this continue showcasing our rich heritage to domestic and international audiences through active, engaging experiences,” he added. — DayakDaily
