2 Gawai clusters emerge in Sarawak with 54 Covid-19 cases

KUCHING, June 12: Two more Gawai clusters have been reported in Sarawak today, with one in Lundu and the other in Kapit reporting altogether 54 Covid-19 cases so far.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the Kampung Sebandi Hilir Cluster in Lundu registered a total of nine positive cases while the Melatai Cluster in Kapit recorded 45 cases.


The Kampung Sebandi Hilir Cluster originated from a pre-Gawai ‘miring’ ceremony gathering on May 31, whereas the one in Kapit was found to have started from social interactions and visiting activities during the Gawai celebrations.

A total of 34 individuals traced to the Kampung Sebandi Cluster were screened where nine people have tested positive for the virus and the remaining 25 cases returned negative results.

As for the Melatai Cluster, 139 individuals underwent the screening tests where 45 cases were positive for Covid-19, 23 were negative and 71 more samples are awaiting laboratory test results.

SDMC, in a statement on Covid-19 update today, assured that all infected patients were admitted to the hospitals or Low-risk Treatment and Quarantine Centres (PKRCs) in respective divisions.

These two clusters were two among three new clusters declared today. The third cluster of the day was also a community cluster involving a housing area in Kuching which infected 33 individuals up to-date.

Meanwhile, the Penurin Cluster in Betong ended today after reporting zero cases in the past 28 days.

There are now currently 82 active clusters in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
