KUCHING, Aug 29: Two individuals from Kuching and Sibu have lost a collective RM954,000 to investment fraud.
According to a press release, Sarawak police commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said for the case in Sibu, they received a police report on Aug 28.
The victim, who is a man in his early 50s and works as an online dealer, received a message from the suspect known as ‘Karen’ through the Telegram app ID @XKSLSLSLAZ and WhatsApp on July 14.
“The suspect offered the victim to invest in USDT investment (a stablecoin crypto project that issues coins pegged to the US dollar) and later told the victim to make a USDT purchase in which the capital will be credited into the mining pool.
“The victim was also promised returns of two to three per cent per day,” he said.
The victim then made 30 transactions amounting to RM796,000 to 16 bank accounts from mid-July to mid-August. He only realised he had been deceived when he could not withdraw money and access the returns from the ‘investment’.
As for the case in Kuching, he said that on Aug 28, a police report was made by a man in his late 60s who works as a contractor.
“On July 20, the victim received a WhatsApp message from an individual who introduced themselves as ‘Jess’ from the Malaysia Stock Interactive Club.
“The interested victim made five transactions amounting to RM158,000 to three bank accounts from the beginning to the middle of this month.
“He realised he was tricked when he could not withdraw the money and profit from the ‘investment’,” he said. — DayakDaily
