2 found safe after trawler boat crashes into bridge pole near Batang Saribas estuary

Firefighters taking down information from the two crew members who remained on the boat regarding the two victims who jumped into the river following the crash.

KUCHING, April 8: Two crew members were found safe after a trawler boat crashed into a bridge pole near Batang Saribas estuary yesterday (April 7).

According to a report from Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, they received a call regarding the incident at 10.43pm and deployed a team from Bomba Saratok to the location.


The operation commander reported that a total of four crew members were on the trawler on their way from Kuching to Beladin.

En route, the boat experienced engine failure casing it to drift on the water, which resulted in it hitting the bridge pole.

The two found victims, who panicked, jumped into the river. The first victim managed to swim to the riverbank and was found by local villagers, while the second victim was later found about 20km away from the incident location after drifting away.

The second victim said that he managed to swim to an oil palm plantation on the other side of the river and walked to the plantation security post for assistance.

He was later brought to the Pusa ferry jetty at 7am by the plantation workers and was handed over to the police for further action.

Two other crew members, who remained on the boat during the crash were unharmed. — DayakDaily
