17yo Kuching boy ordered on 2-year good behaviour bond for cannabis possession

KUCHING, March 17: A 17-year-old boy was ordered by the Magistrates’ Court here today to be placed on a two-year good behaviour bond with a surety of RM1,000 after pleading guilty to possessing 0.87 grammes of cannabis.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan made the order after reviewing the case facts and evidence, as well as a social report prepared by the Social Welfare Department.

The teenager admitted to committing the offence when he was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The law provides for a punishment of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts presented in court, the accused was stopped by police during a crime prevention patrol along Jalan Semangat in Bintawa at around 11.05am on Dec 2, 2025, after officers suspected him of being involved in drug-related activities.

A subsequent body search uncovered a transparent plastic packet containing dried leaves believed to be cannabis in the teenager’s trouser pocket.

Police seized the substance and brought the accused to the Bintawa Police Station for further investigation.

The prosecution was handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the teenager was not represented by legal counsel. — DayakDaily
