17yo arrested, drugs worth RM225,000 seized in Miri raid

KUCHING, Aug 30: A 17-year-old boy was arrested by police on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking following a raid at a courier service premises in Riam, Miri.

According to TVS, Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that during the raid, which was carried out at around 4pm, authorities seized approximately 12,000 grammes of drugs.

“The drugs seized are estimated to be worth around RM225,000 on the black market. This amount has the potential to affect about 40,000 users,” he said during a press conference in Miri on Friday (Aug 29).

According to him, the drugs seized were MDMA (ecstasy), while an initial urine test on the suspect showed he was positive for ketamine.

“The suspect has no prior criminal record. This case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not less than 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed,” he explained.

The suspect has been remanded for five days, from August 27 to September 1, to assist with the ongoing investigation.

He added that the police are continuing aggressive investigations to track down the remaining members of the syndicate.
