KUCHING, Feb 24: Fifteen-year-old Sarawak climber Valerie Law has earned a spot to represent Malaysia at the 2025 Climbing Youth World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, scheduled from July 28 to August 3, 2025.
According to a spokesperson from the Sarawak Climbing Association, the teenager made this remarkable feat after cinching the second runner-up position in the Female Open Category at the recent National Sports Climbing Boulder Series 1/2025 held at Kompleks Sukan Mendaki in Putrajaya from Feb 22 to 23.
PMNS elaborated that Law has made history as the youngest athlete to secure a podium finish at the event, bringing immense pride to Sarawak.
“Law’s success highlights her talent, determination, and potential as a rising star in the sport of climbing. We look forward to witnessing her continued achievements and more podium finishes in the future,” said the spokesperson.
PMNS is seeking support from the Sarawak Sports Council (MSN) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) ahead of the World Championship in Helsinki to ensure Valerie has the resources necessary to excel in the competition.
“Such backing would not only empower Law but also strengthen Malaysia’s representation in global sporting events.
“Law’s achievement is a source of immense pride for Sarawak, and we are confident that she will continue to shine on both national and international stages.”
PMNS also added that Sarawakian athletes performed exceptionally well at the national competition.
“Besides Law, four Sarawakian climbers—Ambrose Giak, Aslan Goh, Russell Kung, and Sean Wong—also competed in the event.”
PMNS said Goh and Kung advanced to the semi-finals, while Ambrose reached the finals in the Male Open Category, showcasing the strength of Sarawak’s climbing talent.
The competition was organised by the Malaysia Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation. It attracted 71 participants across Malaysia, including 24 female and 47 male climbers. — DayakDaily
