KUCHING, Nov 20: The Ministry of Works (KKR) is intensifying its response measures and real-time monitoring of 1,572 high risk slopes along Federal roads, as the Northeast Monsoon heightens risk of landslides nationwide.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said there are 1,572 out of 34,633 slopes along Federal Roads nationwide that have been identified as high risk, with the probability of collapse.
“73 rain gauge stations throughout Malaysia, 41 stations are located in Peninsular Malaysia, 19 stations in Sabah, 11 stations in Sarawak and 2 in Labuan. These rain gauges will record rainfall data and will provide early warnings when the reading reaches a threshold value according to data for the relevant location,” he said in a Facebook post today following the minister’s question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Current warning limits and updated rainfall readings will be displayed on the JKR Landslide Early Warning System website, also known as SAATR, where alerts will be issued to relevant authorities.
Nanta also pointed out that district and state level JKR teams have been instructed to intensify patrols, inspections and monitoring of high risk areas, particularly along Federal and state roads.
“The slope drainage system will be ensured to be in good condition along Federal and state roads,” he said,
In addition, the public can access updated information on disaster locations, road closures and route status through the JKR Disaster Operations Room or Bilik Gerakan Bencana JKR Malaysia (BiGBen).
“KKR is always committed to ensuring that the Federal Road network is always safe and comfortable for all road users,” he said. – DayakDaily
