KUCHING, Nov 1: As of August this year, a total of 1,459 accidents have been reported on the Pan Borneo Highway (LPB) Sarawak, with 53 fatalities recorded, according to statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sarawak.
Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) acting director Wisil Lichok revealed that in 2023, there were a total of 1,974 accidents, resulting in 92 fatalities.
“For accidents at roundabouts, 51 cases were reported in 2023, while as of August this year, there have been 65 cases,” he said during an interview with TVS at the JKR Sarawak headquarters in Wisma Saberkas today.
Wisil emphasised that safety awareness on the LPB is a collective responsibility.
“The public must always adhere to the traffic regulations set by the authorities, particularly speed limits, follow the correct procedures for navigating roundabouts, and avoid driving against the flow to reduce travel time to their desired destinations,” he advised.
To enhance safety awareness at roundabouts, he mentioned that JKR implements several initiatives, including the ‘Safety Advocacy Tour on the Pan Borneo Highway’, the production of safety awareness videos about roundabouts and speed limits, and road safety campaigns during festive seasons.
Additionally, Wisil reported receiving numerous complaints regarding vandalism at bus stops, littering at bus stops and roundabouts, and theft of road dividers.
These reports include instances of electric meters, which power the streetlights at roundabouts, being stolen or damaged by irresponsible individuals.
“This has led to streetlights malfunctioning, creating potential hazards for other highway users.
“Such acts incur significant costs to the government for repairs and maintenance,” he added. — DayakDaily
