14 honoured at Sarawak Ma’al Hijrah Awards for excellence in Islamic development, education, public service

MIRI, June 17: A total of 14 recipients from various categories were recognised at the Sarawak-level Ma’al Hijrah Celebration 2026, held at the Miri Indoor Stadium today, in appreciation of their outstanding contributions to Islamic development, education, dakwah, community service, and public administration in the State.

According to a press release, the awards ceremony, presented by Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, celebrated individuals, institutions, civil servants, educators, and students who have demonstrated excellence and commitment in strengthening Islamic values and community well-being across Sarawak.

The highest honour, the Research and Development Award, was presented to Associate Professor Ir Ts Dr Siti Kudnie Sahari in recognition of her academic and research contributions.

The Da’i (Islamic preacher) Award went to Norhaza Ahmad Redzuan Abdullah, while the Mosque Management and Administration Award was presented to Masjid Al-Ghazali, Kuching for its exemplary governance and community engagement.

In the civil service categories, the Muslim Civil Servant Award was awarded to Mohd Syukri Abdullah, while the Non-Muslim Civil Servant Award was presented to Datu Kueh Lei Poh.

The Outstanding Family Award went to the family of Laman Yasim, recognising their strong family values and contributions to society. The Youth Award was presented to Nurul Cleo Sharmeen Roslam.

In the “Saudara Kita” (new Muslim convert) categories, the male recipient was Helmi Abdullah, while the female recipient was Zainab Sato Abdullah.

In the education segment, SMKA Tun Ahmad Zaidi (TUNAZ) received the Outstanding Religious Secondary School Award, while SKA MIS Sri Aman was named Outstanding Religious Primary School.

For student excellence, the Excellent Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) Student Award went to Nurul Shazwani Mohamad Rashdan, the STPM Award to Josh Hamid Doharome Suparno, and the SPM Award to Hanies Nadhrah Nehal.

The Ma’al Hijrah recognition programme serves as a platform to honour excellence across multiple sectors while reinforcing efforts in ummah development, strengthening Islamic values, and promoting social harmony and progress in Sarawak.

The celebration was attended by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg alongside State leaders including Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohammad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, and Sarawak Islamic Council chairman Datuk Misnu Taha. — DayakDaily
