SARIKEI, June 4: The 12-kilometre traffic congestion along the Pan Borneo Highway, near the Jakar section yesterday (June 3), was caused by a sudden and significant increase in the number of vehicles, exacerbated by a one lane closure for road upgrading works.

Sarikei District police chief Superintendant Aswandy Anis explained that the congestion occurred due to the bottleneck created by the partial lane closure at the construction area.

“Following that, the police have worked to ease the flow of traffic in the affected area yesterday and this operation continues today,” he said in a news report by TVS today.

Aswandy also advised the public to stay cautious and patient when navigating through the area.

Yesterday, social media users shared images and videos of the unusual and severe traffic congestion along the stretch, as people returned to cities and towns following the conclusion of the Gawai Dayak festive holidays.

Netizens reported the congestion in front of SMK Sungai Paloh and after the Selalang junction heading towards Jakar town from Betong, with vehicles moving at a slow pace.

“The worst congestion so far, some had to urinate on the side of the road.

“Vehicles move very slowly from Jakar to the Selalang junction. This shouldn’t happen,” said one Facebook user.

Some urged the authorities to take appropriate actions to prevent such congestion from occurring again.

Many also questioned the action to close one lane when the number of vehicles was expected to rise during the public holidays.

Several accidents were also reported along the Pan Borneo Highway on that day. — DayakDaily
