119 SPM top students from Sarawak receive PETRONAS sponsorship

KUCHING, Oct 20: PETRONAS has awarded education sponsorships to 119 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2022 high achievers from Sarawak this year under its Powering Knowledge programme.

According to a media release today, this represents an increase from the 108 sponsorships awarded in 2022, accounting for 19.8 per cent of the total 600 sponsorships granted to recipients throughout Malaysia this year.

Under the Powering Knowledge initiative, PETRONAS is allocating RM340 million to support SPM high achievers pursuing tertiary education across various academic fields. These fields encompass Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics, Accounting, Marketing, Law, Data Science, and Data Engineering at local and international universities.


Most will be studying at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), and the rest will be at leading universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, and South Korea.

The students received their sponsorship letters from PETRONAS chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh during a presentation ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 14.

Also present was PETRONAS senior vice president of Project Delivery & Technology Datuk Bacho Pilong and Yayasan Sarawak deputy education director Louis Simon Peter.

Speaking at the event, Mohd Bakke said: “PETRONAS believes that investing in education and human capital development at all levels will enable a continuous and sustainable pipeline of talent. PETRONAS Powering Knowledge is our commitment to champion the pursuit of knowledge among students and educators. We support their quest for quality education and are devoted to empowering them to strive for progress and impact a rapidly changing world.”

PETRONAS, under its Powering Knowledge programme, has contributed RM556 million towards education programmes in Sarawak since 1992. This investment includes the RM101 million MRSM Bintulu, which will be opened soon.
