1,140 evacuated from flood-affected areas across Sarawak, majority in Kuching division

KUCHING, Jan 2: A total of 1,140 residents from 287 households have been evacuated to 10 temporary relief centres (PPS) across Sarawak as of 8am today, following flooding caused by the monsoon season.

According to a statement from the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS) posted by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the evacuees were primarily from areas in Kuching, Samarahan, Limbang/Lawas, and Miri divisions.

The Kuching division recorded the highest number of evacuees, with 1,095 residents relocated to seven PPS following rising floodwaters in several locations since late December.

Abdul Wahab Rahim, Director of the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) and Secretary-General of JPBNS, emphasised that continuous monitoring and enhanced preparedness measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of affected residents.

“JPBNS will continue to enhance the level of preparedness and operational coordination at all PPS that are still active, in addition to implementing continuous monitoring of the current situation to ensure the safety and welfare of affected residents are always maintained.”

He also advised the public, especially residents in at-risk areas, to always be vigilant, obey the instructions of the authorities and follow official information issued by JPBNS from time to time. – DayakDaily
