11 nabbed for allegedly assaulting, wrongfully confining man over debt in Sibu


SIBU, Feb 18: Police came to the rescue of a 24-year old man who was allegedly assaulted and wrongfully confined by 11 persons for failing to settle his debt.

The eleven, including a including a woman were subsequently detained in connection with the case and are being investigated under Section 386 of the Penal Code for extortion by putting fear of death on the victim and Section 342 of the same Code for wrongfully confining the victim.

Sibu Deputy district police chief Supt Collin Babat said a 29-year old housewife had on Feb 16 lodged a police report after she received a call from one of the suspects that they had confined her brother-in-law for failing to settle his debt of RM19,000.


“The suspect had also sent five video clips showing the victim, 24, being beaten until he sustained injuries to his head,” he said.

Police managed to locate the whereabouts of victim and rescued him on the same day.

This also led to the arrest of 10 men aged between 16 to 25 and a 26-year old woman.

All of them were later tested positive for drugs. Police also seized from them 11 handphones.
