KUCHING, Sept 15: An 11-month-old girl, Adelya Sufian, who is a carrier of carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and suffering from severe chronic lung disease, anaemia, and rickets of prematurity, presumed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), needs RM29,200 to survive.
The baby girl was born prematurely at 29 weeks, and since her birth, she has been lying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a government hospital in Kuala Lumpur, receiving critical care with tubes inserted into her nose and mouth.
Malaysian Da-Ai Charity Association person-in-charge Danny Tan said the mother, Siti Nur Nadhirah, 32, works from home while her husband, Sufian Sukri, 33, is a pet groomer.
Their income is insufficient to cover the expensive medical expenses and necessary medical equipment for their baby.
Nadhirah recalled an incident when Adelya’s breathing temporarily stopped, and family members rushed her to the hospital. Fortunately, she survived.
Nadhirah hoped for her baby girl to return home and be reunited with her family soon, adding that Adelya was hard-won for her and her husband after experiencing multiple miscarriages, bringing them immense sorrow.
“Due to her premature birth, doctors have warned of a high risk of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in her airways, which can lead to severe lung problems, heart issues, or even life-threatening conditions.
“To ensure the baby’s safety, she must receive the Palivizumab (Synagis vaccine) injections, totalling five doses,” Tan said.
The doctor had also informed that due to Adelya’s chronic lung disease, she would require a Bipap machine to assist her breathing even after being discharged.
The baby also requires an enteral feeding pump and a suction machine for her care.
In summary, the needed allocation of RM29,200 is for the Synagis vaccine worth RM18,800, the Bipap machine (RM7,000), the enteral feeding pump (RM2,500), and the suction machine (RM900).
