KUCHING, Nov 19: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Bintulu foiled an attempt to smuggle 103.46 kilogrammes of methamphetamine worth RM3.31 million during a baggage inspection operation at Bintulu Airport earlier this month.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Norizan Yahya said two suspects, aged 22 and 26, were arrested after four of their checked luggage pieces triggered suspicion when irregular images appeared on the airport baggage scanner.

“During the thorough inspection conducted in the presence of the suspects, officers found 100 plastic packets containing crystal-like substances believed to be methamphetamine.

“The modus operandi in this case was to smuggle dangerous drugs into Sarawak by hiding them inside checked luggage,” he told reporters at a press conference at the JKDM Bintulu office on Tuesday (Nov 18), as reported by TVS.

Norizan added that the syndicate employed a common concealment tactic often used in cross-border smuggling.

Methamphetamine is classified as a dangerous drug under Part III of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the same Act, which carries the death penalty, or life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed. — DayakDaily
