10-year driving license renewal offers more flexibility, convenience for rural folk

Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin

KUCHING, May 5: The latest initiative by the Transport Ministry to extend the renewal period of Malaysia’s driving license to 10 years will offer people, particularly those living in rural areas, greater flexibility.

Welcoming this initiative, Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said this new policy would provide people with increased flexibility in managing their licenses and associated cost.

“This will also benefit the rural people who live far from the JPJ (Road Transport Department) offices as they will only need to renew their license once every 10 years.

“This will reduce inconvenience and save them time and travel expenses,” he said in a statement yesterday (May 4).

Lee also encouraged license holders to take the opportunity to renew their driving license with a special fee rate of 10 per cent discount, which can be done at all JPJ offices and counters starting May 8.

On the special authorisation for renewal of expired Malaysian driving licenses without having to retake driving tests, he said this initiative is great news to those affected.

This initiative addressed the challenges faced by Malaysians abroad who cannot renew their driving license due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“They must take the opportunity to renew their license before Dec 31 this year,” he added.

Federal Minister of Transport Anthony Loke announced the two new initiatives on May 3.

The public can start enjoying the benefits of these two initiatives from May 8, 2023, by dealing at the JPJ offices and counters only.
