KUCHING, Aug 17: Police have confirmed a tragic incident in Elmina township, Shah Alam, Selangor today, where a private light aircraft crashed at around 3pm, resulting in the loss of 10 lives.
The Malay Mail has reported that among the 10 casualties, eight were passengers aboard the plane, while the other two were motorists on the ground.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAMM) had earlier confirmed that the Beechcraft 390 aircraft, which crashed in a residential area, carried a total of eight individuals.
Its chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud stated that among them were two pilots and six passengers.
The ill-fated plane took off from Langkawi International Airport at 2.08pm with its destination being Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.
The timeline of events reveals that the aircraft had established contact with the Subang Air Traffic Control Tower at 2.47pm, and landing clearance was granted at 2.48pm.
“However, at 2.51 pm, the Air Traffic Control Tower noticed smoke emanating from the crash site, although no mayday call had been made by the private jet.
“In response, the Kuala Lumpur Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (KL ARCC) was activated to manage the ensuing search and rescue mission,” it said.
Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim also confirmed the incident, as reported by Bernama.
According to China Press, the small aircraft suddenly plummeted to the ground and exploded upon impact. Debris from the plane is said to have struck a motorcyclist, who was reportedly burnt to death.
Teams from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), police and ambulances are present at the scene. — DayakDaily
